Remote DevOps work for Indian engineers is no longer rare. A growing number of global companies hire remote DevOps/Platform engineers from India — at global salaries.

Here's the current landscape.

Why Remote DevOps Works

DevOps engineers are particularly well-suited for remote work:

  • Most work is done in terminal, IDE, or browser — location irrelevant
  • Infrastructure is in the cloud — no on-site hardware
  • Async communication via Slack, GitHub, Jira works well across time zones
  • On-call can be handled via phone from anywhere

The main challenge: time zone overlap. Companies want at least 4 hours of daily overlap with their team.

Types of Remote DevOps Jobs

Fully Remote (India-based, Global Company)

You're employed by an Indian entity (often an EOR like Deel, Remote.com, Multiplier) but work for a US/European company. Salary paid in INR or USD.

Salary range: ₹25L–₹80L+ depending on company and experience

Example companies: GitLab (fully distributed globally), HashiCorp, Cloudflare, Pagerduty, Datadog

Remote-First Product Companies (India)

Indian startups with remote-first culture. Salary in INR.

Examples: Razorpay, Groww, Zepto, Zomato (selective roles), Cred, Postman

Salary range: ₹20L–₹50L for 3–7 years experience

Contractor/Freelance Remote

Work as a contractor for US/European companies via Toptal, Upwork, or direct. Paid in USD. More money, less stability.

Rate: $40–$100/hour depending on specialization

Where to Find Remote DevOps Jobs

Job Boards

Remote-specific:

Regular boards with remote filter:

  • LinkedIn — filter by "Remote" + "DevOps"
  • Glassdoor — filter by location "Remote"
  • Indeed — "DevOps remote India"

India-specific:

  • Cutshort.io — strong for Indian remote tech jobs
  • Instahyre — good for senior roles
  • Naukri.com — filter "Work From Home"

Direct Company Career Pages

Many remote-friendly companies post exclusively on their own career pages:

gitlab.com/jobs
hashicorp.com/jobs
cloudflare.com/careers
pagerduty.com/careers
grafana.com/about/careers

Community Job Boards

  • DevOps India Slack — #jobs channel
  • CNCF Slack — #jobs channel
  • r/devops on Reddit — monthly "who's hiring" thread

What Remote Companies Look For

Communication skills (more important than on-site):

  • Written communication — you'll write a LOT of async messages
  • Documentation — "does this person explain things clearly?"
  • Over-communication — "I'm blocked on X, will try Y and circle back by EOD"

Self-management:

  • GitHub/JIRA activity during working hours (companies check this)
  • Meeting ownership — if you set a meeting, you run it
  • No chasing required — you surface problems before they become blockers

Async-first mindset:

  • "Does this need a meeting or can a Slack message with a doc link solve it?"
  • Response time expectations: Slack 1-2 hours, email 24 hours (unless urgent)

How to Position Yourself

LinkedIn Profile for Remote Work

Add explicitly to your summary:

"Open to remote opportunities with global companies. Available for
IST (UTC+5:30) with 4+ hours overlap for US EST or EU CET teams."

Resume for Remote Applications

Add a "Remote Work Setup" section:

Remote Setup:
- 300 Mbps fiber connection + 4G backup
- Dedicated home office with video/audio setup
- Available for IST + 4 hours EST overlap (7 AM - 12 PM EST)

This removes a common objection before the interview.

The "Why Remote?" Interview Answer

"I've been doing distributed infrastructure work for [X] years —
managing cloud resources across regions, collaborating with teams
in different time zones. Remote work is how I naturally operate.
My setup is [describe setup]. My communication style is async-first
with clear documentation — I prefer writing things down rather than
creating sync meetings for everything."

Salary Negotiation for Remote Roles

Know where the company is based. A US company hiring via an Indian EOR pays Indian market rates (₹25–45L). A company paying in USD directly pays US rates (₹60L–₹1.2Cr+ for senior).

Ask early in the process: "Is this role compensated on US/global scale or India market rates?"

You save time and they appreciate the directness.

Use Levels.fyi to check what the company pays in the US, then negotiate a % of that.

Top Remote-Friendly Companies for DevOps Engineers

CompanyTypeApproximate Salary
GitLabFully distributed₹40–80L+
CloudflareRemote-first₹35–70L+
HashiCorp (IBM)Hybrid/remote₹30–60L+
Grafana LabsRemote-first₹35–65L+
PagerDutyHybrid/remote₹25–50L+
PostmanIndia HQ, remote₹25–55L
RazorpayIndia, remote₹25–50L

Remote DevOps jobs at global companies are the highest-paying option for Indian engineers without relocating. Build the communication skills and home office setup, target US-scale companies through EOR arrangements, and focus on async-friendly positioning.

Certifications help you stand out for remote roles — international hiring teams use CKA, AWS SAA as objective quality signals. KodeKloud has all of them.
